It all started in 1982...
Close to 5 corners in downtown Chilliwack, Tom Hoedeman opened the doors of Hoedeman Optical in August of 1982. After spending 6 years in Holland studying at University, he would be considered a qualified Optometrist in Europe. Unfortunately, this education did not meet the criteria of Canada's Optometrist certification, but did allow him to become a certified dispensing Optician. One of just a few independent Opticians in Chilliwack, Tom focused on providing a European full-service and unique experience for his customers. By providing exceptional service and quality products, customers would continue to return to the store over time to help build his small business and allow Hoedeman Optical to become a staple in Chilliwack.
Four years after opening the store, Tom travelled back to Holland to attend a trade show in Utrecht. It was there he learned new soldering techniques and a variety of key pieces of information to help grow his business. Maintaining European influences helped drive the individuality of his business over years. |

Additionally, Tom made a name for himself by being an active participant in the community, and the Downtown Merchants Association. He engaged the community through the Progress newspaper by providing "Optical Opinion" articles to help educate and inform people regarding the world of optics, and served as a representative for The Downtown Merchant's Association. He actively encouraged business growth in the downtown core, as well as community involvement. During the annual Santa Claus parades, he was a regular fixture with his parade floats, which were always built by hand. In 1996, he won first place!
In 1990, Tom anticipated the growth of Chilliwack and Sardis and opened a store on Luckakuck Way. This centralized location would accommodate customers from both sides of Chilliwack without anyone having to travel too far. Initially, he operated two stores, one downtown and one on Luckakuck Way. Eventually, he decided to focus his efforts on a single location to continue to provide the exceptional one-on-one service he was known for. For the past 40 years, Hoedeman Optical has evolved and grown into a comfortable, unique optical store, and the values of service and quality have never been compromised. |
